Elaine Alphin

In a terrible coincidence, as I was writing the preceding post about my new critique group, one of my partners, Elaine Alphin, suffered a massive stroke that has her in the ICU attended by her loving husband, Art.

Elaine is a prolific author of more than thirty books for children and young adults, including the award-winning novels The Ghost Cadet, An Unspeakable Crime, The Perfect Shot, Ghost Soldier, and Counterfeit Son.

Elaine Marie Alphin, doing what she loves best, July 27, 2011
More importantly, Elaine is generous, warm, loving, intelligent, a superb critiquer, has a childlike heart, and she's my new friend. We are all thinking of her and praying for her and for Art now.

Thank you so much Mieke. I can't believe it. She is still in a coma. Such talent. Thanks for your thoughts and prayers.

Elaine has been a family friend since she and my mother went to collage. She has a lot of "nephews" praying for her.

Thank you, Joseph. I know your thoughts are helping Art, too.

Are there any updates on Elaine's condition?

Hi Mary and others - Elaine is living at home under Art's care. She has limited mobility and some responsiveness, and is receiving therapy, but she does have a long, long road ahead. She has not recovered her ability to speak or fully respond. I know Art is doing everything he can.

My class is again reading Counterfeit Son with an at risk group of 9th graders. Much love to Elaine and hope she is doing better.
